| Santo Domingo is the capital city of the Dominican Republic. Santo Domingo is a thriving metropolitan city that features Cultural centers, theaters, night life, fine dining, casinos and much more.
The Colonial Zone is home to lots of 16th century architecture, such as the Plaza De España, the first Cathedral in the new world, the first street in the new world, Fortaleza Ozama, El Conde shopping area as well as restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs. The Colonial Zone is a short walk from Hotel Residence.
If visiting Santo Domingo during the winter months, be sure to go to a Dominican Winter League baseball game at nearby Estadio Quisqueya. Many major leaguers play baseball in the DR during the winter and the games here are a bit different than in the states. It is like one big party and the crowds are really into the game.
If you are a beach person, there are beaches nearby in Boca Chica, Juan Dolio and San Cristobal. Boca Chica is about 30 minutes from Santo Domingo and features crystal clear waters, that are very calm because a nearby reef forms asort of natural lagoon.
During february there are Carnaval celebrations all over the Dominican Republic. The most popular is Carnaval La Vega which is less than 2 hours away. Bonao is a bit closer and is becoming famous for Carnaval as well. Carnaval is every sunday in February.
